Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, bringing with it opportunities to share love and appreciation. While small children may not yet understand the significance of celebrating the mothers in their lives, that doesn’t mean they can’t participate. Mother’s Day is a chance to help your child pamper and encourage the strong women around them. Here are five ways you and your child can observe Mother’s Day together.

Celebrate Loved Ones

While this may seem like an obvious choice, it is easy for Mother’s Day to sneak up on us in the midst of all the other happenings in May. Instead of being caught by surprise, prepare a bit in advance and encourage your child to participate in spreading love. For example, your child could make cards with markers and stickers to give to grandmothers, aunts, and other women he or she loves. Then the cards could be mailed to arrive on time. Alternatively, if loved ones live close, take the opportunity to bake cookies or drop by for a visit with a small bunch of flowers. Celebrating doesn’t have to mean expensive gifts or elaborate parties. Instead, let your child choose gifts that they find meaningful and deliver them personally.

Make Cards for the Elderly

If you are looking for ways to spread the celebration further than just your family, consider helping your child make cards for elderly women in your area. While some women in local nursing facilities have family who will celebrate them, there are certainly some who do not. Once you have created some cards and maybe picked some flowers, ask the nursing staff if you can drop them off or, better yet, deliver them to the women who receive few visitors. This is a simple and special way to brighten the women’s day while also teaching your child an important lesson about generosity and kindness.

Pamper Yourselves

There are few things more memorable than spending a day together just having fun. This year, forget what you “should do” on Mother’s Day and stay home for a day of pampering instead. Eat your favorite foods, watch a movie, play games, and just enjoy one another. Maybe you can try a new face mask or soak your feet. Whatever you do, be sure to especially pamper the moms in the family by giving them first choice of all the fun you have!

Have a Tea Party

While tea parties are frequent activities in the world of dolls and stuffed animals, when was the last time your family got all dressed up and sat down for tea and cookies? A tea party is a great way to allow a child to plan and put on an event for his or her mom without extra work for everyone else involved. Your party can be fancy or casual, as long as everyone has fun. The mom of the household experiences all the love and gratitude of the event while your little one is empowered and excited to do something so special on his or her own.

Take Photos

Some of the most priceless gifts you can give any mother are family photos. While children continue to grow and change rapidly, those photos capture them at one lovely moment in time. Consider hiring a photographer around Mother’s Day to gift the moms in your life the ability to look back on this point in life. Even if a professional isn’t a possibility, some intentional photographs are meaningful.

Mother’s Day means many things to many people. Regardless of your life situation, the holiday gives your family the opportunity to show love to all the important women in your life.
